Melissa's Guide To Veneto - Whole Bunch Wines Wine Tasting
Melissa has been guiding us through the wines of her homeland all year and this tasting focus on the wines of Veneto. This spans everything from the always welcome Prosecco, (but not as you know it), to the rich and decadent Amarone, with three wonderful stops in between.
Whole Bunch Wines is always hosting THE BEST tastings, including more Italian tastings from Melissa, so make sure you see what's coming up right here.
Ca' Morlin Prosecco Superiore Spumante Asolo DOCG NV
Everyone loves Prosecco, but this is not your average supermarket plonk. This is DOCG Superiore Prosecco. Asolo, along with Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, is one of three regions which can produce Prosecco with the esteemed DOCG label. Then, Superiore denotes that the wine can contain more alcohol than normal, but this in maintains a low level of 11% ABV.
Beyond that, this long lasting mousse is enticingly light and provides a rich array of flavours which includes sweet green grapes, candied apples, white flowers and a touch of gooseberry. Crisp, dry, light and wonderfully refreshing. This is Prosecco as it should be.
Pergolino Bianco Veronese
Next up is a wicked blend of Geganega, Chardonnay and Trebbiano from the top producer of Pergolino. Unique blends, such as this, can be found across the Veneto region, outside of the more established white wine regions like Soave. It allows winemakers more room to experiment and produce different styles of wine.
This particular offering is a beautiful lemon colour and exudes aromas of white flowers, almonds and citrus peel. You'll also get a wealth of fruit flavours on the palate, including white peach, green melon and pink grapefruit.
Cantina Valpantena Brolo Dei Giusti Valpolicella Superiore
In Italian, 'Brolo' refers to a walled vineyard similar to the French term 'Clos'. Cantina Valpantena takes this wine from three separate 'Broli' which amounts to just 13 hectares of vines.
It is partially made from dried grapes and has spent around four years in various forms of oak. All this provides their flagship Brolo Dei Giusti Valpolicella Superiore with an intensity and complexity that is hard to match. You'll experience notes of mellow fresh red fruits, (in particularly cherries), dried redcurrant, violet, mixed spices and bitter almond.
Neroperso Appassimento
Here, we have one of Whole Bunch Wines house wines and far and away the most popular house red. It is sensational. The Appassimento method is used in the production of fine Amarone wines. Yet, it has also become increasingly popular with more classical dry wines.
This wine is packed full of these dried fruit flavours, as well as notes of plums, blueberry, dark chocolate and coffee. A true fan favourite at Whole Bunch and a much beloved house wine. Rich, luscious and silky smooth.
Casa Vinicola Bennati Elite Amarone dell Valpolicella
Amarone. It is one of the Italy's, and in fact the world's, most prestigious and revered styles of wine. Intensely decadent, rich and absolutely jam-packed full of flavour. It is a whopping 15% ABV and blends Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. Big, booming and not to be missed.
This oak aged wine will impart a warm bouquet of baking spice, tobacco and dried red fruits, which develop on the palate alongside notes of plums, cherries and strawberry jam.
