International Syrah Day - Whole Bunch Wines Wine Tasting
Whether you call it Syrah or Shiraz, it is undoubtedly one of the world's most beloved and planted grape varieties which is responsible for some of the world's best wines in all corners of the globe. We've just had 'International Syrah Day', so in honour of that we wanted to highlight the history of this grape variety, as well as some top tier wines which are made from this grape variety.
Whole Bunch Wines is always hosting THE BEST tastings, so make sure you see what's coming up right here.
El Ixsir Red
This first wine is not 100% Syrah, instead Syrah is blended with other classic Bordeaux grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It comes from Lebanon, which most people agree to be the ancestral homeland of the Syrah grape variety. It is a big and bold wine which packs a punch of dark fruit flavours, as well as layers of spiced and woody aromas, wrapped up in a velvety texture.
Dandelion's Vineyards Lion's Tooth Shiraz/Riesling Blend
This wine is a really unique blend of Shiraz and Riesling, from artisan Aussie winemakers. A marriage of red fruits and rose petals from the aromatic Eden Valley Riesling. On the palate, it is pure wild cherries, blueberries and oaked spice. The tannins are pronounced but velvety with a soft finish thanks from the Riesling. Always a fan favourite, we highly recommend you try this one.
Tenet The Pundit Syrah
Next up, we're onto the USA. More specifically, Washington state. Interestingly, the Pacific North-West has garnered attention from French winemakers and negociants who are based in the Rhône Valley. This is due to the perceived similarities between the two regions, particularly with regards to weather and soil composition. This is further backed up, by the fact that 'The Pundit' includes small percentages of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Viognier. All of these are grapes synonymous with the Rhône Valley, or Souther France. It is packed with notes of pepper, chocolate, smoke, violets and heaps of black fruit.
Maison Les Alexandrins Côte-Rôtie
We are closing on an absolute classic. The Northern Rhône is perhaps the wine region in which the Syrah grape variety is most revered. Appellations such as Hermitage, or Côte-Rôtie command sometimes eye-watering price tags. In truth, they are often exceptional. Truly complex and expertly crafted, somewhat austere but also evolving in the glass and bottle. Round, velvety and possessing perfumed aromas of violets, alongside black fruit flavours.
