Around New Zealand In 5 Wines - Whole Bunch Wines Tasting - The Line Up

Let's take a look at what featured in this Whole Bunch Wines Tasting.

Burn Cottage Central Otago Riesling Grüner Veltliner Blend

We are starting things off with something exceptional. Burn Cottage was founded 2002, when they coverted a sheep paddock into one of Central Otago's finest Pinot Noir sites. Yet, we've gone for an enticing blend of two zippy and aromatic white wine grape varieties - Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.

It displays an aroma of white peach, jasmine, lime, white pepper and fresh ginger. This gives way to a rich and texture wine with a mineral kick. Fresh, rich and exceptionally delicious.

Blank Canvas McKee Vineyard Grüner Veltliner

We're staying with Grüner Veltliner. This offering comes from Blank Canvas in Marlborough. Blank Canvas was founded in 2012 by Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson and award-winning winemaking consultant Matt Thomson. It was also one of our best-selling wines of 2024.

The hand-picked fruit is destemmed, crushed and gently pressed at the winery, before ageing in large French oak, (20% of which is new). The wine delivers powerful notes of orange citrus and white pepper, before tropical notes develop on the palate in this rich, textured, complex and full bodied wine.

Greywacke Wild Sauvignon

Now, the Marlborough staple which is Sauvignon Blanc. However, this one is different. It comes from esteemed producer Kevin Judd and Greywacke. This early pioneer of New Zealand wine spent time at Cloudy Bay before venturing off on his own. Now, Greywacke is one of the most revered and recognised brands in New Zealand wine.

This is the 'Wild' Sauvignon. It is fermented in old oak using indigenous yeast which results in a length fermentation process. This adds depth and texture, as well as a lingering savoury finish with notes of tarragon and tea leaves. However, it still delivers those strong citrus and tropical fruit flavours.

HaHa Pinot Noir

HaHa wines are nothing to laugh about. In the Māori language, it actually means to catch you breath. It is also a family owned vineyard which has garnered international acclaim for their wines from both the Marlborough and Hawke's Bay regions.

Their Pinot Noir is classically Marlborough. Cold soaked prior to temperature controlled fermentation in a mixture of stainless steel and oak. It has a spicy flair and subtle complexity, as well as a palpable freshness and a wealth of red fruit flavours.

Trinity Hill Hawke's Bay Syrah

We are rounding off our lineup with a red wine from Hawke's Bay. This region of New Zealand has built up a reputation for more full-bodied red wines from Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. Trinity Hill is one of the leaders in this area of New Zealand wine.

Originally founded in 1993, this winery operates in the Gimblett Gravels section of Hawke's Bay. Their Syrah displays intense notes of red and black fruit, alongside touches of liquorice and pepper. Supple and crisp with a long and lingering finish.
