Brand: Protero
Grapes: Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc
Vintage: 2022
ABV: 13%
Who/What/How:
- Stephen and Fiona Pannell purchased the Protero vineyard in 2019. In a mere matter of days, it was surrounded by major bushfires. It managed to survive the fires and the tireless work of those who fought the blazes inspired the Pannells’ to sink further investment into this vineyard. They always focus on growing fruit in the right place with considerable attention in the vineyard, translating to minimal intervention at the winery.
Taste:
- The Gewürztraminer has fermented until it was dry, whereas the Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are both left with some residual sugar which can be felt on the palate. Both these parcels are then blended together on their lees and left to settle in a stainless steel tank. Finally, they’re racked once and no further adjustments are made by the winemakers - as they say minimal intervention at the winery is the goal. Intensely fragrant and floral, with sweet spices and tropical fruit notes.
