Whole Bunch Wines Guide to Thorne and Daughters

It's the Whole Bunch Wines Guide to Thorne and Daughters. They're a relatively new producer who began producing wine in 2012. However, they do it as well as anyone!

Let us take you on through a brief history of Thorne and Daughters, as well as some of their wines which can be purchased at Whole Bunch Wines!

The History of Thorne and Daughters

As we mentioned Thorne and Daughters was founded in 2012. Since 2012, they've had the express goal of creating wines which are vinified as naturally as possible and authentically represent the Western Cape. They are key figures in South Africa’s ‘New Wave’ wine movement and work with innovative winemakers across South Africa.

While they may be considered part of the 'New Wave', the history and traditions of South African wine are very close to their heart. They draw on that history, putting new grape varieties into old vineyard parcels. They simply look to add modern edges and flair to the classic and much beloved South African wines which we all know.

The Vines and Wines of Thorne and Daughters

Thorne and Daughters are largely known for Cape White Blends which are primarily sourced from 15 growers across the Bot River, Stellenbosch, Voor Paardeberg, Overberg, Franschoek and Swartland regions of South Africa. However, they've also garnered some real acclaim for their single-varietal Pinot Noir in the cooler are of Hemel-en-Aarde.

The wine-making approach is relatively simple. Wines are fermented using indigenous yeast, in either stainless steel or old French oak barrels. White wines will often stay on the lees until blending which adds texture. Red wines are gently extracted and often vinified using whole bunches, (and you know WE love whole bunch wines).

In short, the goal is a low intervention philosophy which means that the winemakers take a somewhat more hands-off approach. They respect the land and try to make a smaller imprint on the land in which the grapes are grown to promote both sustainability and longevity.
