The Whole Bunch Wines Guide To Bodegas Vallemayor
It's the Whole Bunch Wines Guide to Bodegas Vallemayor. They are a close friend of Whole Bunch Wines and have popped in to host tasting events, so make sure you keep a close eye on our wine tastings to see when they're coming in next.
The History of Bodegas Vallemayor
Our good friends at Bodegas Vallemayor are purveyors of fine Rioja wines. This family-run 70 hectare vineyard focuses predominantly in Tempranillo, (as many Rioja vineyards do). They have also recently expanded the winery and kitted it out with completely new winemaking machinery to further ensure the quality and consistency of their excellent wines.
Vallemayor began when Luis Perez Foncea had to retire from working for other family vineyards due to illness. This led to him selling wines from his home to of Fuenmayor. After finding success in this endeavour, he realised his dream and established his own Rioja winery.
The Vines and Wines of Bodegas Vallemayor
Bodegas Vallemayor has 70 hectares of vineyards across a number of different sites.
The Pagos del Valle has 23 hectares of vines, which grow in irrigated valleys that stretch between Fuenmayor and Navrrete. All the vines are over 30 years old and give birth to Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano grapes.
Next up is Bujed. Here, 12 hectares of vines glisten in a beautiful, sunny hillside where white wine is the focus. The majority of the plantings are 45 year old Viura grapes - a staple in white Rioja. However, we also have 5 hectares of newer Viura and Sauvignon Blanc.
One favourite section of Bodegas Vallemayor - Vina La Cerradilla. It is just 5 hectares of vines, but it is the 'noblest' vineyard and the pride of their winery. 50 year old Tempranillo vines survive in harsh climatic conditions, which limit yields and produce wines which are absolutely packed with flavour.
Honourable mentions are still reserved for the remaining vineyards; Pagos Sotés y la Dehesa, Pagos del Camino de Logroño, El Romeral and La Mata. In the vineyards you can find Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo.
