The Sauce Subscription - January '25
The first subscription of a new year, and with a brand new look. We had to push out the boat with this one. This one is all about 'New Year, New Wine'. We looked to introduce you to new regions, new grape varieties and new styles of wine. We think we definitely succeeded!
Many of these wines aren't regulars on our shelves, so if you'd like to see some of these in the future, please let us know!
Red Wine
Bedoba Saperavi [£24.50]
- With this world-class Georgian red, the end result is a dark purple liquid exuding both spicy and savoury aromas, before giving way to notes of plum, blackberry, herbs, violets and black pepper. Rich, ripe and absolutely delicious. Read More
Pedro Parra Vinista [£26]
- Pedro Parra’s Vinista wine is what he describes as a ‘village wine’, noting both the quality and reasonable price compared to more premium offering. Look for notes of wild berries, dried herbs and white pepper. 100% Pais and packed full of crisp flavours.
Bodega Garzon Estate Tannat de Corte [£23]
- Bodega Garzón is a family-owned winery in Maldonado, on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay. They are one of the most renowned winemakers in the country and they were recognised by ‘Wine Enthusiast’, as ‘New World Winery of the Year’ in 2018. This wine is bursting with notes of raspberry ripple, cardamom and fresh black and red fruits. Out of this world!
Cantina Atzei Saragat [£22.50]
- The Saragat Monica is macerated and softly pressed for 10 days. Then, select yeasts are used to ferment before the wine is aged for 6 months in French oak barrels. This allows the final product to balance both a rich spicy character, silky tannins and a freshness. A truly exceptional wine, which you won’t see on your supermarket shelves. Maraschino cherries, sweet red cherries, mulled wine spices and tart blackberry notes in abundance.
Trinity Hill The Gimblett [£34.50]
- There is more to New Zealand red than Pinot Noir. This blend of Cab Sav, Cab Franc and Tempranillo is a revelation. Rich, oaked red that will rival the best of Bordeaux with intense notes of bramble, cedar, liquorice, vanilla, blackcurrant, blackberry and red cherry.
Willunga One Hundred Tempranillo [£21]
- A 100% Tempranillo for McLaren Vale that will make you forget all about Rioja. It spends 8 months in the barrel which adds a subtle spiced and savoury quality, but the fruit flavours are what really sing with this vibrant wine. You'll note flavours of cherry, red berry, blackberry and blueberry.
White Wine
Curatolo Arini Gagliardetta Zibibbo Secco [£28.50]
- Zibibbo is a Sicilian staple, known elsewhere as Muscat. A touch of sweetness comes through with this wine, but bracing acidity keeps it feeling fresh and balanced. With about 4.56 grams per litre of residual sugar. So, while it remains a dry wine you’ll note a touch more body than you would it a bone dry offering. Fresh herbs and citrus give this one a proper Italian feeling.
Gallina de Piel Ikigall White Blend [£23.50]
- Penedès is best known for the much loved Cava, but there are some exceptional still white wines in the hills of Catalonia. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to further preserve the fruity and floral flavours. The wine goes through four months of lees ageing to add a richness in texture, before the final product is fined and bottled.
Bodega Garzon Estate Viognier de Corte [£23]
- Another absolute stunner from Uruguay - this time it is 100% Viognier. Watch out Condrieu! Grapes were hand-harvested before undergoing fermentation in stainless steel tanks for two weeks to preserve those delicate floral and tart fruity notes of apple, pear and apricot, (to name but a few). However, the wine also goes through a three month period of lees ageing which really bolsters the already unctuous texture and layers in complexity through notes of brioche on the nose and palate.
Kaiken Método Tradicional Brut [£23]
- Did someone say Traditional Method fizz from the Mendoza icon Kaiken?! We did! This blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is simply sensational. A cool fermentation occurs for the base wine, before the wine is bottle-fermented, (the same process is used for Champagne), for 30 days and left on the lees for two years which really pushes up the complexity and structure of this elegant, racy and thoroughly delicious sparkling wine.
Poggio Al Tesoro Solesole [£33.50]
- Next we move to Tuscany. Traditionally, it is a red wine area - but we have shone a light on a single varietal Vermentino that will knock your socks off! It is rich, mineral and wonderfully complex. An exceptional wine which displays powerful notes of white flowers, yellow plum, gravel, apricot, pink grapefruit, nectarine and peach.
Amalaya White Blend [£18.50]
- Last up, an Argentinian classic. No, it's not Malbec. This white wine, which is a blend of Torrontés and Riesling, punches well above the price-tag. Grown at altitude, this wine maintains a palpable freshness and crisp acidity. Fermentation is carried out slowly and at low temperatures, with selected yeasts, to preserve the varietal notes of the Torrontés and Riesling grapes. The wine then just spends 3 months in stainless steel and 2 months in the bottle before being released. Fresh and pure fun.
