Riesling Showdown - Whole Bunch Wines Wine Tasting
March 13th marked International Riesling Day and we had to celebrate that fact at Whole Bunch Wines.
The Riesling grape variety has the potential to go from bracingly lip-puckering acidic to rich and lusciously sweet. We wanted to showcase the whole spectrum of this noble grape variety.
We're always hosting THE BEST tastings, so make sure you see what's coming up right here.
Wieninger Riesling
- Fritz Wieninger is one of the brightest stars in modern Austrian winemaking, although his family have been producing wine for over 100 years. A classic take on central European Riesling. Tart, with tangy citrus notes that dominate the palate, alongside more gentle and delicate floral flecks.
Henschke Julius Riesling
- We love Henschke at Whole Bunch Wines and the Peggy's Hill Riesling is a regular on our shelves. However, we always like to try new things. So, we stepped it up a notch to Henschke's Julius Riesling. Once more, we have strong citrus notes, but the nutty and floral flair of this wine is ramped up. Look out for notes of fresh almond, thyme, jasmine and Kaffir lime leaf. World class.
Blank Canvas Anandale Farm Riesling
- Another variation on a familiar favourite. The Blank Canvas Grüner Veltliner was one of our top-selling white wines of 2024. This expression of Riesling is whole-bunch pressed, (yes please), before being chilled to kill the fermentation and keep the wine at just 9.5% ABV. A flush of sweetness of the palate that puts one in mind of classic, still lemonade. Unique and exciting.
Maximin Grünhaus Single Vineyard Herrenberg Kabinett Riesling
- We are definitely getting sweeter now and there's no real better place to go than the Mösel region of Germany. The world's premier Riesling wine region. Flashes of lime will still hit the palate, but you will also note far riper fruit flavours such as lychee and pineapple. A premium expression that perfectly balances the sweet and the acidic.
Inniskillin Niagara Riesling Icewine
- Icewine is one of the world's most unique styles of wine. The grapes are pressed, while still frozen from the icy vineyard. This means that the water in the grapes is separated from the sweet juice, which means the final product is far richer. Canada are experts at this style of wine and we've found a corker from Inniskillin. Look out for lemongrass, melon, lemon and lime notes, as well as touches of toffee apple.
