Last Of The Summer Wine: What We're Drinking This Fall - Whole Bunch Wines Tasting - The Line Up
Let's take a look at what featured in this Whole Bunch Wines Tasting.
Gusbourne Blanc de Noirs
Here, we have an English sparkling wine produced via the 'Traditional Method'. This means that you get the same richness and texture of fine Champagne. It is also a Blanc de Noirs which means it is produced exclusively through red grapes. This 100% Pinot Noir offering is decadent with a wealth of red and black fruit flavours, alongside sweet red apples. As with Champagne, it has also been lees aged which adds a lovely layer of texture, depth and complexity via notes of toast, biscuits and brioche.
Francis Coppola Director's Cut Chardonnay
We are off to California to sample the wines of acclaimed director Francis Coppola. The wine is classic American Chardonnay. The Chardonnay still provides that crisp and refreshing acidity, but layers and layers of complexity come through thanks to the wine spending 8 months in French barriques. This means that alongside notes of pear, mango, lemon and peach, you will also find notes of vanilla, cloves, hazelnut and baking spices.
Tamboerskloof Viognier
We are off to South African next, for a rich and unctuous Viognier. The light golden hued liquid will exhibit pronounced notes of tangerine, orange blossom and rose, as flavours of peach, warm spices and apricot develop on the palate. All this culminates into an intense and textured wine with a long, lingering finish.
Hattingley Valley Still Pinot Noir
We are going back to England for another Pinot Noir, but this is a classic still red wine. Hattingley Valley is an award-winning winemaker from Hampshire, who have earned over 200 medals and 16 trophies at numerous prestigious international awards. This is Hattingley Valley's first foray into still red wine and they've knocked it out the park.
In many respects, it mirrors the fine wines of Burgundy. It has fine tannins, balanced but prominent acidity and an elegant structure which rolls into the silkiest of finishes. The wine is all black and red fruit notes, (cherry, raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate), alongside notes of toast and dark chocolate.
Matoševic Grimalda Red
We are rounding off are tasting with a trip to Croatia. This old world wine-making nation is often overlooked when compared to more classic wine-making countries such as, France, Spain and Italy. Matoševic Grimalda comes from their Brdo vineyard by River Mirna and Lake Butoniga.
This specific offering is a blend from Merlot, Teran and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety is aged separately for 15 months in oak barrels. Complex, but lively and fresh and in spite of the heft and richness the wine is wonderfully easy drinking.
